Maria woke in the middle of the night with an incredible desire to scratch her right arm, where she found a monstrously big insect bite. While scratching, she began to feel another bite on her leg, one on her foot, another on her head. She was twisting and turning but couldn't scratch every bite, and they were itching like crazy. Reluctantly she slipped out of her sleeping bag, turned on her torch and lit a few candles...........
Hundreds of Buddhist monks, known as 'lamas', were now kneeling in long rows inside the temple and outside in the yard, flooding it with burgundy colour and shaved heads. To her surprise, Maria noticed some westerners among them, both men and women who were also wearing red robes and had shaved heads. Large trays of fruit were placed here and there. The recitation of a mantra, the deep sound uttered by the lamas, was now stronger, increasing in volume as the minutes passed and the people joined them. It radiated an irrepressible power, touching the conscience of anyone who perceived it, whether near or far away....
