They walked briskly uphill for two miles on a paved road in the fresh, crystal clear air and came to Vashist public baths in just over half an hour. The reception was a bare room with rough concrete walls. It was four rupees for a deluxe bathroom for two people. Could the three of them go in together? Yes, no problem, six rupees, which they paid at the desk. But, before their bath, Franca and Veronica wanted to smoke another chillum to 'relax better' and went to sit on a fallen log at the edge of the forest that surrounded the spa. To pass the time, Maria lit a cigarette. Sitting on a wall in the sunshine, she watched the people who came and those who left, with wet hair and a rolled-up towel under their arm. In the distance, walking uphill, she noticed a couple............
Karen came laden with packages and bags. Paul got up quickly and went to take the bags from her hands; then he returned to his seat next to Maria. Karen sat down, gasping and asking for a chai. She began to speak rapidly, softly, chuckling to herself as she recounted the episodes of those hours spent alone. Maria couldn't help but feel a strong sympathy for her; she seemed to live in the clouds, seeing the reality that surrounded her in a blurred way, choosing not to see properly because she preferred the free world of her imagination and vibrant creativity to reality as it was.
