MADE IN NIRVANA
When Maria awoke, she saw two other people had arrived. They had settled near the door, leaving an empty bed between theirs and Franca's. A boy and a girl, they were sleeping, barely covered by a sarong. Franca was fast asleep with a scarf over her eyes. It must have been around eight in the morning. Maria sat on the bed and put her sandals on. Immediately she thought of Sanya and Colin who would have already been travelling for hours; she was sorry they had left. Who knew if and when she would see them again? Nam-myoho-renge-kyo was her first thought, that sentence seemed to have imprinted in her mind, like an inscription engraved on stone.....
The shopkeepers sat cross-legged on their shop floors, which were lined by a thin mattress covered with white cloth. The shops opened onto the pavement, without any doors or windows. The goods for sale were a feast for the eyes: silk saris, cotton fabrics, printed sarongs, dresses, skirts, shirts, all hanging from the ceiling and out in the open, they swayed to the passing of people. Fire red, pea green, sky blue, sunny yellow, candid white, bright orange; vivid colours commanded her attention and changed shade at every movement........
