Chapter 4
Something incongruous

When Maria awoke, she saw two other people had arrived. They had settled near the door, leaving an empty bed between theirs and Franca's. A boy and a girl, they were sleeping, barely covered by a sarong. Franca was fast asleep with a scarf over her eyes. It must have been around eight in the morning. Maria sat on the bed and put her sandals on. Immediately she thought of Sanya and Colin who would have already been travelling for hours; she was sorry they had left. Who knew if and when she would see them again? Nam-myoho-renge-kyo was her first thought, that sentence seemed to have imprinted in her mind, like an inscription engraved on stone.....
