The present is a gift
Maria woke up; she was sweaty, hungry, thirsty and immensely happy. Jean-Claude was still asleep, catching up from the pre-dawn rising of the morning. She looked at him in silence: his eyes closed, with thick curled eyelashes, his high cheekbones, wavy hair, strong shoulders; her heart was full of love. She tied the sarong under her arms and went downstairs to order chai and toast..................
The street lights all came on at the same time and the atmosphere changed. There were stalls on wheels that cooked and sold food. With their kerosene stoves at full throttle they were preparing sabji, bhaji and curry dishes that were served there and then with banana leaves for plates. People ate standing up and everywhere there was an air of celebration.
