Chapter 16
The Frenchman
Franca was shaking her: "Maria, wake up, we are in Varanasi, India's holy city!"
She opened her eyes but couldn't focus. Having her eyes open was a pleasant feeling, though; she didn't feel exhausted, quite the opposite, she felt well. She observed her body's sensations, her feet, hands, legs, arms, and herself inside; she sensed her internal organs, her stomach, heart, lungs, in their place, engaged in their work, their physical appearance. She perceived her body and her mind in a way much deeper than usual; it seemed as if they were two separate entities, observing and studying each other with interest, for the first time. She was waking up, but slowly, and although her body was responding to her mind, it was doing so in its own good time and her actions were delayed.................

Suddenly, Franca's face appeared in the mirror behind her, tired and dusty, but sparkling with enthusiasm. "There you are! Did you sleep all day?" she asked. Maria was glad to see her.
"More or less, and now I was talking to one of the Frenchmen who were at Delhi station, do you remember them? They're staying here too."
Franca didn't remember them and, at this particular moment, she wasn't interested. "I've been around Varanasi throughout the day. What a place!" she exclaimed, dying to share with her what she had seen..............
